Hello—Welcome to 📚 Hyperpoints.
If you like philosophy, zen, networks, history, and returning repeatedly to the question, "How might one live?” you’re in the right place. I also write fiction which I think of as a more deeply integrated layer of this whole project. Everything I study eventually ends up in my stories or art. I sometimes think of writing fiction as a dialectical process.
Who Am I?
By trade, I’m a computer scientist and software developer. In reality, I have many interests. These include composing music, game design, studying, meditation, philosophy, walking, reading, video game history, as well as technical research into how things work. I’m just as much a storyteller as I am an engineer.
My goal is to read “every book in the world” and I don’t take that lightly. I spend most of my time studying influential texts and works which catch my eye from across the world and all throughout history. Ultimately I am trying to map reality as best I can in my humble lifetime. For me, knowledge and learning are essentially a religious practice, a practice of open-mindedness and seeking of perspectives. It’s not so much about finding “the truth” as it is about exploring the archives of humanity.
I’m often reminded of the old Zen Vow:
Sentient beings are numberless. We vow to save them all.
Delusions are endless. We vow to cut through them all.
The teachings are infinite. We vow to learn them all.
The Buddha Way is inconceivable. We vow to attain it.
I find Buddhism and Taoism especially effective for organizing and holding other philosophies and perspectives without having to negate them or retreat from them. In other words, I find their acceptance of reality an effective basis for living.
My Projects
SOFTWARE:
I’ve built an open source associative note-taking app called Synthona which you can download for free, and am working on a more advanced successor to that project in the background. My primary interest with these software projects is in designing note-taking apps, databases, and file systems. I’m applying philosophy to computing.
NOVELS:
There are a few short stories up on Hyperpoints, though they are mostly freeform sketches. The real work is in writing novels. My fiction is creative exploration, I make an effort while writing fiction to “let loose” and “go bonkers” with my use of language. I’m fond of extravagant characters and wacky situations. Wile E Coyote and Roadrunner are my ideal, though I’m not afraid of writing tragedies. My influences are a mix of classics and obscure texts I discovered through ancient online forums.
My debut novel Gunblaster Hyperborea is a cosmic tragedy of doom which becomes a cosmic comedy of laughter by the end of the story. Mostly it’s a mix of both. It’s [available now] with paperback and ebook editions. It has a number of rare allusions and impossible academic riddles. It’s a mess. Probably incomprehensible. This review said it was for babies, but this open letter I wrote in response re-frames the issue.
Ultimately, I won’t let the critics get me down. I’m really glad I wrote it.
ESSAYS:
My essays are free to read, but I’m planning to move older works into collected volumes so I can give them the care and context they deserve. If you’d like to support my work, consider picking up a copy of Gunblaster Hyperborea, donating on itch.io, sharing something, or stay tuned for upcoming essay collections.
Welcome!
That’s about it! Feel free to peruse the archives at your leisure. If you’re feeling sociable, you’re welcome to introduce yourself in a comment—though there’s absolutely no pressure. Comments are for readers and those just passing through.
Keep on Keeping on 🌱
